RESCHEDULED DATES FOR THE 27. DEF

Regrettably, due to the current situation, Days of European Film (DEF) cannot take place during the original dates and have been rescheduled to the second half of June. We hope that we will be able to meet in cinemas from 16 to 23 June 2020 without any worries.

“We, of course, support all the necessary measures and we believe that they will yield the desired results and the situation will soon return to normal. In spite of that, however, it is probable that travel will continue to be restricted for some time to come and so we respond to this contingency with a different approach to the related events. Consequently, ambassadors from among Czech influencers will help us promote the respective DEF sections.

Discussions with foreign film-making guests after screenings will be replaced with debates on professional topics. The audiences can thus look forward to meeting environmentalists, travellers, economists, musicians, comics, journalists or political analysts, and we look forward to the return of audiences to Czech cinemas,” comments Barbora Golatová, the Festival Director.

As usual, the main part of the DEF programme will take place in Prague, Brno and, for the first time, in Ostrava, too. DEF will then move to another 5 towns in the form of Festival Echoes. DEF focuses exclusively on contemporary European cinema and will present 40 films from nearly 30 European countries in 2020. “We are trying to show modern European cinema in its many shades. We will offer films that received awards at festivals, audacious debuts as well as movies, which mix genres with an intoxicating charm,” says Šimon Šafránek, the festival’s new Programming Director.

The main section of this year’s edition of the festival is called FEAR AND DREAMS and it will focus on a genre mix of thrilling and emotional film experiences. The traditional STARS section will offer films by recognised directors and films that won at famous festivals. Another new addition to the programme is the section titled WITHOUT PARENTS where we will be able to find films for children and teenagers. Conversely, we will traditionally take a look at the current events in Europe in the TO THE POINT section, this time with the subheading INTO THE WILD, which will address our coexistence with Nature. DEF has also been interested in the combination of FILM AND MUSIC for a long time now; and just like we do every year, we will return several older films to cinemas in the section titled MEDIA – ABSURD WORLD where we will present ironic comedies.
